The technology of Effective Microorganisms, which is called EM, is a universal word in over 150 nations allover the world. Thus, EM, which is a mixture of beneficial microorganisms, namely yeast, Lactic acid bacteria and Phototropic bacteria found in all ecosystems of the world, is used by humans for their welfare with no adverse effects to them or the environment-in contrast, it is beneficial to both living and non living factors of all environments. Most people today state that there is no versatility in this word. However I can guarantee that EM is versatile because I know this technology.
Most people who criticize EM are those who do not practice the technology but criticize it or those who have developed fake EM products, some with the same acronym EM.
The real truth is that in Japan alone there are over 3000 schools using EM to recycle waste water and clean swimming pools and this is expected to rise to 5000 schools in the near future. Hence, EM is fast becoming a household word in Japan, as over 100 non profit organizations have been established to promote EM. It is estimated that some 12 million Japanese use EM.
On a global scale, there are over 120 nations using EM successfully. The versatility of EM and its application can best be presented by some examples.
In Belarus, EM was used effectively to reduce radioactively contaminated soils from Chernobyl. The use of EM X promotes the decomposition of dioxin and other chemicals and detoxifies the impact of heavy metals such as Chromium, Cadmium and Mercury.
EM is being used in the Ariake Sea since 2001, thus enhancing the biodiversity of the fish and other aquatic lives. The fishermen are happy as it enhances their incomes. Due to this success, the Aichi prefecture of Japan is using EM to clean up the Yahagi River and its environments, with successful results.
The Osaka Fishermen’s Cooperative Association has a project to reclaim Osaka bay with EM. Thus a 180 metric ton fishing pond was developed into an EM incubating tank to produce 170 metric tons of extended EM in 14 days. This is the largest tank in Japan and is used for pollution control in the ocean and also oil spills. Another example in Japan is the use of EM to clean the Doton Buri River. The river was cleaned within a year of applying EM,and with EM application for another 12 months, the water quality was acceptable for swimming. Today the aquatic environment in the river mouth has improved and fresh water clam production has been restored. These examples are today used as models and the use of EM is expanding.
On the international scene, the examples of EM use are vast. These range from scientific studies on all facets of EM to real practical use in both developed and developing nations. The most recent academic studies range from the use of EM for disease management in vegetables as found by a Ph D student at the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand,to the use of EM in uplifting the living sanitary conditions of a very poor group of people in south India. The latter is thesis for a Doctoral degree from a University in India, which highlights
scientifically and systematically the benefits of EM for the socio economic upliftment of the rural poor. The advances with EM and its versatile functions in the developed nations need not be mentioned. Microbes in EM and its safety
As you already know, the microbes in EM are Lactic Acid bacteria, Yeasts and Phototrophic bacteria which have been used in the food industries for a long time. The values of these microbes lay in their ability to produce different antioxidants directly or indirectly, which in turn activate and promote beneficial microbes in ecosystems. Hence EM promotes both beneficial microbes in ecosystems and strengthens the properties by the synthesis of antioxidants If I may clarify this further, one can easily present the example of the breakdown of harmful substances such as Dioxins. In nature, there are many microbes such as fluorescent Pseudomonas species, which could decompose Dioxins and other harmful chemicals. However once the level of pollution increases, their activity declines and oxidation processes are activated. Hence the benefits of these microbes in overcoming pollution are limited to laboratory studies and the techniques are not stable or practicable under field conditions, where the problems really are observed. Hence until the propagation of EM, there was no stable and practicable microbial technology to mitigate these problems.
The advent of EM thus offered a solution. The microbes in EM are easily activated with molasses, water used to wash rice before cooking, and water used for cooking noodles or even sugar can easily be used. The activated EM can be used for environmental management to decompose pollution in land water or even seas, by the spread of antioxidant conditions and enriching the beneficial micro flora. This is the success of EM. Hence the recent advances in EM, even in the United States of America have progressed to an extent where a probotic named Pro EM 1 is registered and sold for human consumption. EM is used in making beer, in making Sake and pickles. EM and EM X are used in treating humans – for allergies, and even lifestyle diseases very effectively. All these show the versatility of our technology.
EM and the ecosystem
There is a saying- What is good for the back is not good for the head-This quote can easily be applied to EM as well-as there are so many people against the technology while others-the more practical people who are concerned about health and environments are gathering around the technology.
It is 26 years since EM was born and its 24 years since its introduction into the Japanese society.
It is 17 years since the technology was made public, beginning in Thailand. Today it is being spread around the world .In some regions the spread is faster and other slower –however it is growing. This is because EM has not produced a negative report if it was used as prescribed. The best example for this is the large tank in Osaka-using EM for environmental reclamation.The principle cause of this expansion is simple- The microbes in EM are anaerobic and produce antioxidans.It is very difficult for these anaerobic microbes to live under natural conditions. Thus when EM is extended or activated with molasses within a medium where the pH is below 3, 5 it creates an unnatural conditions. In order to develop their activity, one principle is to have sufficient microbial populations, as EM becomes effective when the microbial density is reached threshold values. However with time, if re-inoculation is not done, the effectiveness of EM is lost to the ecosystem this clearly indicates that the microbial population needs to be maintained over time to achieve the desired results. One often wonders if there are negative reports on EM on its hazards, adverse effects on ecosystems and the fauna and flora. Those who stated EM is bad had have not really tested it as per guidelines given by the experts; it is with great happiness that I can say that when EM has been used as per guidelines, there has been no negative impact from the time of its first use from any part of the world. There has been no damage to soils or its characteristics, biodiversity or to water. The reverse has been true. This is because EM is made up by microbes used by every one and even after activation has not produced any toxic effects. The mere fact that EM is made in the respective countries also overcomes quarantine problems and hence there is no need to get prior approval from the relevant authorities to use EM in a given local situation.
Effective use of EM.
The natural microbial populations change all the time and the success of an ecosystem and its functions depends on the balance between the beneficial and harmful microbes. Thus, the principal point of using EM is to use the microbial solution until a suitable population is built up. I have often heard people criticizing me for pushing the technology and its use to extreme points when I say use EM until it works. However EM is cheap. .when compared to all other similar technologies, and the activation process of EM makes it even cheaper.
There are some brewing companies voluntarily participating in programs to purify water using EM activated with rice wash water.They also use EM in septic tanks and water projects in order to clean the environments.The same holds true for agriculture.Farmers who state that EM is not working do so because they have not used sufficient quantities or the activation process is incorrect.It is often cited that 500 liters of EM per acre (1000sqm) is ufficient to enhance the productivity of rice fields or even highland soils,and detoxify soils from chemical pollutants while cleaning the water.In animal husbandry,EM can be used for animal feed,in drinking water and for spraying the holding sheds or houses.This reduces pollution and the wastes could be made into good quality compost and used with EM for cropping.Foul odor is easily eliminated by EM and hence crop-animal integration,which is often recommended for small farms,can easily be praticed with EM.The use of EM does not end here-It is effective,when used in households to maintain sanitation-There are very good examples of household waste water and effluent treatment with EM here in Europe,due to collaborations between Austria and Australia,and the overall benefit is the discharge of these beneficial microbes to the environment to develop multiplier effects.
The secret of EM –Entropy and Syntropy
The technology of EM was developed through a stroke of luck-and the results were clearly against conventional scientific thinking and common knowledge.Hence I decided to use EM under real situations to promote the technology,which I believed would help humankind lead a better life.I always knew that traditional science made mistakes and with changes in conditions,the results also change.As EM was versatile entity,a new path was adopted,well knowing that current science leads to entropy,which destroys resources,loses energy and causes oxidation,leaving pollution as the final result.This is a destructive process.
In contrast,EM changes ther process-and protects resources through a process of purification.It resurrects nature and there was no word to explain this phenomenon.Hence I coind the word Syntropy in 1997,which is opposite to that of Entropy.This is being widely used and I believe that the benefit of EM is due to Syntropy.
Today the technology of EM has advanced in many fields,including the treatment of human diseases,remodeling old architecture,enhancing food properties and preserving them,for maintaining equipment and in general enhancing life quality on this planet.For example,using EM in paints helps protect buildings and purifies the atmosphere.This is proven through research.Using EM in buildings helps protecting them from acid rains and the strength given to buildings provide them to be reistant to earth quakes.Thus today EM is being used to protect cultural heritage sites at a lower cost.
All these benefits appear because of the antioxidant properties of EM.This phenomenon not only prevents oxidation,but also changes processes from destruction to resurrection.Hence I believe that this is a catalytic role that EM plays and the role of cosmic energy cannot be ignored.It is very difficult to explain these phenomena through conventional science,and I have been stating the role of gravity wave resonance to clarify these observations.However all these need scientific validation and discussion,which I am not prepared to enter into at this stage.
Demonstration is the key to making people believe-even the most die hard skeptics.It is this objective that the EM Wellnes Center was developed and opened to the puplic in April 2006.The Center has a 220 roomed hotel remdeled on the principles of EM Technology to disseminate this process to the world.There will be a presentation of the Center and its facilities,and I hope that all of you will visit the center-and use its facilties to be convinced of the success of EM.I warmly welcome you all to Okinawa and the Center at a very early date.
The future visions
Human life in this world is full of worries-and stress is becoming a key factor affecting human health.This is closely followed by the rapid destruction of our environment,which accentuates the stress factors.Thus.realizing the potential of EM to overcome all these problems,I have aggressively advocated the use of EM for human health and protection of natural resources,while producing quality food.I have presented all these possibilities and the potential of EM to help achieve a better plant for us in the book Earth Saving Revolution,published in 1993.Today after seeing the benefits that I believed possible actually happening-I have realized that EM is not only a technology-it is pathway to the future.The technology has the potential of producing sufficient quantities of good quality food-helps stop environmental degradation and revives nature and its resources for reuse,it helps enhance human health and even treat patients,and finally it helps to develop a global society based on Co-existence Co-prosperity and Quality.
The technology of Effective Microorganisms can be used anywhere-from mountain tops to the ocean beaches and ocean waters.Thus,it is versatile and effective.However,I do warn you that this world is not a place which is free from corruption.There are many imitations of Effective Microorganisms-even using similar sounding names and acronyms.Thus while I do advise and advocate the use of EM,I also wish to advice you-be aware of imitations and use the Effective Microorganisms developed by Higa and promoted by the EM Research Organization,International Nature Farming Research Center (INFRC),Asia Pacific Natural Agriculture Network (APNAN) and the accredited organizations that work with these three organizations.I do assure you that the technology used correctly will help develop the path for the future for a bountiful and healthy life in a clean environment.In conclusion,I wish to use some slides to show the EM Wellness Center-however before I begin this small presentation,
